I was actually asking about the dd being done from sdi1 rather than sdi which your
original email mentions.  My thinking was that the mdraid was raiding the partitions which
as you point out are smaller than the entire device.  So could the error be outside the
partition range?  If a dd from sdi1 doesn't error then that is the case.
