This sounds familiar. From some very sporadic use, I recall the built
in doco tended to be sparse. I also had some trouble finding some
decent doco - compared to languages like Python and C where there are
tons of tutorials. In the end, I think it was a matter of searching
for odds and ends and gradually hacking together a script until it
worked. No doubt I missed out on various language features...
