Since we're talking about creative uses for plain-text, I'm going to
give a shout-out to Asciio

http://search.cpan.org/dist/App-Asciio/lib/App/Asciio.pm

This is a GTK app for creating plain-text diagrams, with a
surprisingly rich feature set. Like putting a connecting arrow
between two boxes, and having the arrows automatically rejigger when
you move the boxes around. And when you're done editing the diagram,
because it's just text you can paste it into your code comments, or
your README, or your email, or your job ticket, etc.
