What about:
$ sudo rescan-scsi-bus.sh
But you are not alone. I have had this happen a few times. Typically
with my new PCIe USB3.0 card.

In my experience it has tended the be the USB external thingy.
unplugging it/turning it off/on and then doing "rescan-scsi-bus.sh"
seems to sort things.
