I've actually seen times where you use a cross-over between the switch
and computer and it actually works and negotiates to GigE.  I really do
not understand why that worked but for the type of device it was
consistently flakey with a series of normal cables and worked fine with
cross-over.

It's just one of those "out there" answers but it may work for you.
