This is starting to sound like you might have an incorrectly
configured proxy in Firefox for https traffic.  If you go to Edit,
Preferences, Advanced, Network, Settings, then what are the settings
set to?  Is something set for the SSL proxy?  Or perhaps not set for
it, when there is something for HTTP proxy?  Does choosing "No proxy"
or "Auto-detect" fix things?  What if you try another browser that you
might have installed, like Konqueror?
