In a conversation with him a few weeks ago I accidentally referred to
a project as "closed source". He cut me off, replying:

weakens the free software movement. If you want to help us, please change
this habit, and say "proprietary" or "non-free" rather than "open source"."
So yes, he is all about the "free" bit.
