But it does matter as software is increasingly about connections and
communications. There's no point having cool free communication software
if none of your friends can talk to it. This is not a problem as long as
there are feature filled, robust standards being followed, look at how
SMTP/POP fuelled email as the first Internet "Killer App".

Hence the Big Deal about non-proprietary standards such as the recent
debates about encumbered codecs and the resurgence of Walled Gardens.

I suppose the question is then about integrating with other vendors
without cutting off your own nose.
