That's the key right there IMHO.

When OSS solutions have failed to work it is virtually always because 
there was a problem integrating with a proprietary solution where the 
protocol in question is not well understood.

So to me that boils down to:  Yes you may choose to use proprietary 
devices but then you accept the limitations on interoperability that they 
impose.  These limitations may well limit future options and cost more in 
the long run and if open standards had been used.
