My thanks to everyone who replied.

I went with Jeremy's suggestion.
The 'printk' line in /etc/sysctl.conf is commented out in Debian Lenny
(5), but not so in Ubuntu. Hmmmmmm...

Happy User now without the console being clobbered with 'noise'.
