If you have not already done so, install the package "sashroot". (A
statically linked root shell including enough tools to get you out of
all sorts of predicaments)

Make sure sashroot is running whenever undertaking invasive maintenance.

In similar theme, it is also not good to do an rm -rf of /bin as root
when you are in Canberra, the target machine is in Brisbane, and the
most computer literate person there needs to be told that Return and
Enter keys can be regarded as equivalent...
