Speculation is useless with the absence of detail about systems, etc that the
article gives. If I told you there'd been a car crash today, would you care
to speculate about the age, weight, sex, bank balance and employment of the
driver?

A group of hacked Linux machines were found recently; their admin had enabled
FTP access, allowed root to log in via FTP, and set root's password to ''.
Even the best kernel and infrastructure in the world can't protect against
user stupidity.

Have fun,

Paul
