As a follow up to this (and in case anyone gets here via the mighty
google), here is a geany plugin that I wrote to do just this:

NB: consider this very alpha code!  But it seems to work for me.

After asking on the geany list it seemed that it hasn't been done.
(well, of course until now -- don't you just love FOSS?).
