Bob Edwards, I believe, has the Brad Hards USB Hard Drive Of Open Source 
Goodness (or BHUSBHDOOSG as we call it), which should have (relatively) recent 
versions of Debian on it.  At least, my memory tells me that I left it in 
Bob's hands - Bob?

It's specifically for this situation.
