You could try wrapping it in air-tight plastic, putting it in the freezer, and
then trying it out afterwards.  That sometimes helps free a stuck drive so you
can recover data.

Alternately, you might find that a data recovery company can give you a decent
price on getting the data back.  Rumor has it that at least a couple of them
have given quotes in the couple-of-hundred-dollars range for easy failures.

Personally, though, I would just restore from backup to a new disk, either
from the vendor warranty or just purchased outright.[1]

[1]  Usually, actually, I go for the latter, then warranty-exchange the faulty
     disk and keep it on hand for the next time the disk goes feet-up.
