I've had this exact issue - but with a SD card I always leave in my laptop
(an EeePC) rather than a network drive.  I guess Ubuntu really must screw
around with script orders, since initially I was able to fix the problem by
specifying a UUID in /etc/fstab.

It started acting up again, though.  Now I'm using rc.local, as you suggest.
It's a frustrating problem: why should fstab mounts occur at different
times?
