I don't see how such an IDS would be possible - if your card is in
monitor mode it won't broadcast anything, so there's nothing for the
AP or an IDS to detect.

Well, technically that's not entirely true - I don't know about the
intel ipw3945 drivers, but your atheros based card using madwifi
drivers is certainly capable of transmitting/injecting packets while
in monitor mode - but only if you use a tool like airreplay-ng.
Under normal monitoring circumstances it will not transmit anything
(hint: use your other wireless card in monitor mode and wireshark to
verify this).
