Thanks to those who responded.  Now to figure out whether I should spend
$40/month on another data service...

My sum total experience is only having read a few web pages, but
according to one of them the usb storage/cdrom issue is fixed in kernels
>= 2.6.20.  The latest gutsy is 2.6.22 so everything should
theoretically work with no hacks.
