Have you tried booting off an SD or USB flash drive?

If your EEE does end up bricked can I have your keyboard? Mine had an
H2O hazmat spill... Even after several minutes in front of the heater
it's still firing 'repeat escape' which makes doing anything hard. If
not there is always ebay.
