To chime in with this - I'm nearly done with a module for the Thecus N2100 (
http://www.thecus.com/ ) SOHO NAS, what would offer up AoE devices over
gigabit. Mine has two, mirrored, 1 terabyte disks. Not sure what ther
performance will be like yet. If you're interested, then let me know.

You could also use drbd ( http://www.drbd.org/ ), which will pretend to
offer you a shared disk - "RAID 1 over a network".
