Maybe you'd be better off getting an ssh server. Not only is SSH more secure (FTP permits passwords/data in cleartext) but SSH is easier to permit through a firewall. And it shouldn't be too hard to find a free SSH/SCP client for your daughter to use, even if she's not using Linux. A couple that seem good are Fugu for OS X or WinSCP for Windows.
