I don't have a macbook, but the platform shouldn't matter. I use one of 
these:

http://keyspan.com/products/usa19hs/

 - which just shows up as a standard serial port, at /dev/ttyUSB0. The 
drivers are all in the mainline Linux kernel, so it should Just Work.
