Worked in a place that had some customers doing this. It worked fine,
the main problem is that Oracle write really bad init scripts or don't
do starting/stopping very well.

Sometimes it would not shutdown nicely.  This would of been a version of
Oracle 3 years old now. From the DBA's point of view, it was just
Oracle.
