Chris, IMO the language of "one is called" sounds a little patronising.  
I would say:

    There are two popular "desktop environments" for Linux, that provide
    a different look and feel to Linux.  One is KDE, the other is GNOME...


I'm not a technical writer, though, and, sorry, I haven't done more than 
glance at MtM - mea culpa :-)
