Your concern with Windows Live ID shouldn't be about platform  
independence - it's a web service, which is the highly unsavoury  
Microsoft Passport service with a new coat of paint and a different  
brand name.

Optus is effectively outsourcing its web services to Microsoft, a US  
company bound by US laws. If you have any concerns about your  
personal details and communications being accessed and monitored by  
the US Government, you should seriously consider whether you want to  
participate in the Windows Live program.
