I did a Feisty install yesterday and sudo apt-get install beryl etc
worked fine (I just wasted a couple of hours playing with beryl and
emerald after that).  IIRC there are a couple of options in the GUI add
software menu for beryl and emerald so it would be a check-box only
install

The hardware is a laptop almost two years old with Intel graphics.
