A friend, Chris Smart, has been ramping up his Gentoo-based distro and 
it seems to be doing well.  There's a live CD (http://getkororaa.com/) 
with Xgl yumminess (which is yumminess indeed).  It runs well on my Dell 
ATI-based laptop, though the native resolution doesn't autodetect 
properly.  Nice eye candy.  Wife was impressed.  Never had so much fun 
moving a window around.

If you want to see Xgl in action, and you have a supported card, Kororaa 
Live CD is probably the easiest way.
