[clug] Sound on Dell D620

I have progressed from last week. I now have sound, at least output. Kmix only has an output tab, no input or switches. This may help:
$ aumix -q
vol 84, 84
igain 97, 97
$ grep sound-slot /etc/modprobe.conf
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel

$ /sbin/chkconfig --list sound
error reading information about service sound: No such file or directory

It is as if there are no devices for input.
