Hope this is slightly uphill.

/dev/dsp is associated with oss
For this to work the snd-pcm-oss would need to be loaded.

Do the following exist?
/dev/snd
/dev/snd/controlC0
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
/dev/snd/pcmC0D1c
/dev/snd/pcmC0D2p
/dev/snd/timer

These are associated with the more modern ALSA.

Your lsmod output indicates that the module snd-hda-intel is missing.

try "modprobe snd-hda-intel" to load it (I dont' know mandrake enough on how
to autoload it)

Does running amixer show your sound settings?

Is your device muted (see amixer output)?

Does it make a sound?

aplay /usr/lib/openoffice/share/gallery/sounds/space3.wav
aplay /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/res/samples/test.wav
aplay /usr/kde/3.5/share/sounds/KDE_Beep_Beep.wav

Are your speakers plugged in to the right and turned on?
