What I did was by reading various comments about alsa on the D620 I installed the latest alsa libs, drivers & utils. and from then
on it went downhill.

The following steps are suggested in the Mandriva Linux Control centre > hardware > sound device > trouble shooting

lspcidrake -v reports:
snd-hda-intel   : Intel Corp.|I/O Controller Hub High Definition Audio (vendor:8086 device:27d8 subv:1028 subd:01c2)

modprobe.conf is:

alias eth0 tg3
install scsi_hostadapter /sbin/modprobe ata_piix; /sbin/modprobe ahci; /bin/true
install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe uhci-hcd; /sbin/modprobe ehci-hcd; /bin/true
remove snd-hda-intel /sbin/modprobe -r snd-pcm-oss; /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove sn
d-hda-intel
install snd-hda-intel /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd-hda-intel && { /sbin/modprobe
snd-pcm-oss; /bin/true; }
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
blacklist audio
blacklist snd-usb-audio

lsmod reports:
