Hi Michael, I had problems similar to yours recently, having changed from  
Bigpond to AAPT, I found that sometimes Opera could not get on the net and  
yet Firefox could. I changed from using DHCP to manually entering a  
machine address and also changed DNS settings to 203.2.75.132 and  
203.2.75.2  .
This cured the problem and seemed a bit faster.  Using a similar modem to  
you,  DLink 502t.
