I had similar problems with my old i386 machine. It turned out that  
in my case, the power supply wasn't able to provide the correct  
voltage/current, so the USB power supply kept overheating and turning  
off the USB devices. Though in my case, the devices (keyboard, mouse,  
joystick, etc) would just disappear, never to return.
