It looks like Steve nailed it. The 2.6 machines I've used were up to 2.6.8 or so. I have just put 2.6.10 on the PowerBook and that (fingers crossed) seems to behave as I'd expect. Whew. Here's hoping it stays that way. I wonder why all the other machine/kernel combinations are okay with other USB devices but not the shuffle? Thanks all. MC
