I received the headset/mic today and tried it. This solution works.
I found old cheap, small, powered speakers which are now attached to
the soundcard output. I told Skype to ring on the soundcard and do
audio in/out through the USB gadget.

It now rings loudly on the speakers (and the headset) and the
conversation is on the headset/mic. So far so good.
