One more: if the console in question is of the /dev/tty<n> sort, you can
use the corresponding vcs terminal:

pbarker at milligan:~$ sudo cat /dev/vcs5
Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 milligan tty5

milligan login:
--

Quite limitted in capability, but sometimes enough.
