Well, personally I reformat everything except /home and /usr/local when doing
that kind of upgrade, so I know that nothing from the old version is left
hanging around.
If doing that of course make sure they back up anything from /etc and /var (or
anywhere else the custom stuff might be) that they think they may need. :-)
