I'd concentrate on the scan format, all PDF does is embed the
images in the document. Have you tried dropping the depth of
the documents? Say a 2bit greyscale (black & white). This
would also be likely to compress better as it will have longer
sequences with identical values.

Subject: [clug] Document scanning

Hi Peoples,

Need some help. I want to scan some documents in and present them in pdf
form.

The documents have both text and pictures and I want to get the best
resolution possible, but I want the resultant pdf files not to be huge.

At present, I am using xsane to scan in the documents, saving them in
postscript and using ps2pdf to convert to pdf format.

Is there a way of doing a really high resolution scan but when
converting to pdf, I get a much smaller (in size) pdf file without
loosing too much information.

Thanks in advance
Burn
