The vlc for linux can save TS format which can be played on xine.

I cant work out how to the equivalent de-interlacing when doing file output
that can be done through the view module.

I looked at the vcdimager utility which is a bit out of date (maybe it just
works now) but none of the vlc formats are recognised by it.  Maybe the
MPEG resolution is just too high for VCD.
