There must be hundreds of thousands of automated response systems in 
the form of list request addresses.  Why aren't we constantly being
bombarded by messages from these automated response systems?  We run
spamassassin and some other stuff before passing a message through
to mailman which probably does it's own filtering.

Me too, but that's only because it's easier to filter viruses than
the multitude of virus bounce formats.
