I think you should double check the date that the article was published.

Personally I wouldn't believe anything released on April fools day.

Wait and see if the article gets some confirmation before you get too
worried about it.

If you read the Slashdot comments the consensus seems to think it a
joke.

Besides, it's impossible to measure a gift economy when there is no
dollar value to the gift.
