Suse 8.1 or 8.2 can (and will by default)
install itself into a dual boot mode
over any pre-existing windows system built with FAT filesystem.
It will shrink the windows and fit itself in.
GRUB will offer both Linux and Windows at boot.
You can set whichever you like to be the default.

If the Windows system is to be built over NTFS,
better to reserve the Linux space before installing windows.
In fdisk you could give it a type of 83 as a hint.
Remember you'll need Swap as well. (twice your RAM)

Install Suse second and it will fit itself into the space.
It will also mount the NTFS partition as /windows/C
If you have less than 4 Gig
I'd suggest buying a second HD for the new system.
