I've looked at many books on Linux, but found few to be helpful. The best
book on Linux that I have ever seen was infact just a collection of how-tos.
If you wanna get your hands dirty, learn what you need to know fast, HOWTOs
are the way to go:
http://www.linux.org/docs/index.html
as for distros, have a go with
http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html
Red hat is most mainstream. easy to install & setup, will do the job.
Debian (personal pref.) is more difficult, but you'll probably learn alot
more too.
