Groups command fails for large groups on some systems

Stating the obvious, you have checked your /etc/nsswitch.conf files to make
sure that the group database is coming from nisplus and not somewhere else?
Also, are the /etc/group files identical on all machines, or do some have the
groups listed directly in the file?
