on completely bogus domain names. We have subdomains
here, so I think that complicates things. I can't
remember the bogus domain names exactly, but sometimes
I saw the .com prefix repeated multiple times.

You may wish to try capturing some packets using Ethereal
( http://ethereal.zing.org/ ), which can decode
NIS/NIS+ packets.
