These are the steps I use to create a linux client
note all the copied files are for my env. so you may want to create you some
master copies
Please try this format. for creating new clients.

                rpm -i ./rpm/nis-utils-1.4.1-0.i386.rpm
                rpm -i ./rpm/pam_unix2-1.7-0.i386.rpm
                cp ./etc/pam.d/login /etc/pam.d/login
                cp ./etc/defaultdomain /etc/defaultdomain
                cp ./etc/nsswitch.conf /etc/nsswitch.conf
                cp ./etc/auto.mydomain /etc/auto.mydomain
                cp ./etc/auto.master /etc/auto.master
                cp ./etc/auto.misc /etc/auto.misc
                cat ./etc/hosts >> /etc/hosts
                cp ./etc/init.d/nisplus /etc/init.d/nisplus
                chown root:root /etc/init.d/nisplus
                chmod 744 /etc/init.d/nisplus
                chkconfig --level 345 nscd on
                chkconfig --level 345 nisplus on
                nisdomainname `cat /etc/defaultdomain`
                ntpdate master.mydomain
                nisinit -c -H master.mydomain
