A patchset follows this email. It's essentially a set of minor cleanups
and some changes that need to go in to prepare for SPNEGO. I have a bit
more work done on SPNEGO setup, but am still very much in the "research"
phase with it. The rest of it's probably not appropriate for merging
yet.

I'm sending these as a set, but they're really fairly independent of one
another. You should be able to drop any of them out of the set if
needed.
