One of the devs says that KDE is doing a 'dir notify check' which is
hanging the kernel - which
should not happen.

So, perhaps the problem is not KDE, but kernel CIFS.
and it is just the case that GTK apps are not doing a 'dir notify check'.

I want to see if updating the kernel CIFS code would fix this, but I
have no idea how to do that.

- Is the SAMBA CIFS client the basis for the kernel CIFS code, or are
they unrelated?
- Is it possible to replace/update the kernel CIFS code with latest
SAMBA code?

Regards,
John
