[jcifs] how to investigate authentication failure (with Unix share)

Now comes the stupid question:

Is samba a default component of unix, or is it something added to it?
In other words, is it possible that this specific unix server simply
doesn't have samba on it?
A bit of googling about shows a few linux pages, but no simple 'unix
samba admin guide'.

Without samba, are there other way to see a unix share from a windows
machine?

Feel free to RTFM me to the appropriate google key words: I am a bit out
of my depth here, and that unix box is managed by unhelful BOFH
wannabes, hence the stupid question.
