Melinda,

Again, it sounds like you are simply not using fully qualified DNS
hostnames. No one should be using short NetBIOS names really anymore.
The VPN issue could also be related to this but it would be impossible
to make any judgement about a VPN problem as there are a large variety
of VPNs all of which are usually fairly mysterious things.
