Oops. I've tested with Machine A & B being anyone of
- XP Pro SP1 or SP2
- XP Home SP1
- Win 2k

Also, all tests of SmbShell on any of the above machines work fine 
with Samba 3.0.x on linux as the LMB on the network. 

And, it doesn't have to be a two node network, that was just a 
simplification for explanation.
